Cheshire Ireland
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Nov 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

St. Patrick's Cheshire Home is an non-profit organisation, providing accommodation and support for people with physical and neurological conditions. We also provide support to Service users who are living outside the home, within the local community. Cheshire Ireland is a transforming organization over the next six years - it will be moving from congregated, residential services to supporting people in homes of their own. We have a Community Transition Coordinator who is currently working with three service users to assist with moving out. We currently support 20 service users, presently aged between 41 and 73 Our services operate 24 hours per day, 365 days per year. Objectives: St. Patrick's aims to provide quality, person-centred services that facilities people with disabilities to live a life of their own choosing. We promote the concepts: "The Right Relationship" i.e. do unto others as you would have them do unto you. We respect our service users' dignity and privacy at all times, including their personal choice and unique individuality. We are situated in Tullow, a small town located 85km from Dublin. We have four supermarkets, post office, Pharmacies, several pubs, hairdressing, beauty salons etc. Carlow which is a larger than Tullow is located 13km away. There would be a wider range of services and other facilities available. There is a train station in Carlow, where you can get connections to most parts of the country. Bus Eireann have a service from Carlow and Tullow and Kavanagh's bus hire leave approximately every hour. EVS volunteers will assist around the activities area of St. Patrick's. They will accompany service users on outings, home visits, shopping, bowling, cinema, swimming, bingo, mass and any outing of their own choosing. Without the volunteers, the service users would not have adequate support to partake in activities outside of St. Patricks. Volunteers will assist service users in their own homes: this could include light house work duties, accessing emails, writing letters, reading, baking or gardening. They would assist service user's managing their money on a daily basis, such as shopping and bill paying. We provide the opportunity for volunteers to receive training to assist people with eating difficulties, and for those who have an interest, to support service user's with some aspects of their daily care routine. These are skills which the volunteers can take away with them after their project is finished and it is a worthwhile experience to have. Volunteers are also actively encouraged to bring their own skills to St. Patrick's and their cultural diversity. Volunteers will work five out of seven days and will work a variety of shifts covering from 8am until midnight. There are different shifts and the times will vary depending on service users activities and what is happening in St.Patrick's and the local area on any given week. It is a good opportunity for volunteers to bring new ideas to service user in St. Patrick's and the local area. We have regular meetings, formal and informal where any concerns/issues can be discussed.
