Eaglewood is on Rochestown Avenue, in the affluent suburb of Killiney, Co Dublin which has a local shopping centre nearby and a pub/restaurant. A short 15-minutes walk away is the town of Dun Laoghaire, a town of great beauty located by the sea. There are abundant shopping opportunities, nice walks along the quay, local gyms, churches etc. Dun Laoghaire is approx. 15 km from Dublin city centre where there is an abundance of cultural experiences such as parks, concerts, museums, theatres, cinemas etc. We are just a bus journey away from Cheshire Ireland’s two Dublin-based residential services, (Richmond Cheshire House and Cara Cheshire House) which gives opportunities to meet with other volunteers. The modern, high-end block of apartments are situated in a regular apartment complex and do not stand out as institutionalised. Our aim is total integration within the local community. Three of our service users are in a separate area of this apartment complex, but the bulk of the apartments are together to the rear of the block. There is an entrance hall, three apartments on the ground floor, three apartments on the first floor and two apartments and a staff apartment on the top floor. Each apartment has its own front door. During their stay, the volunteer will live in a self-contained bedroom on the second floor. The volunteer will share the staff kitchen and bathroom. As cooked food is not provided centrally (service users all cook individually in their own apartments), an additional allowance will be provided to the volunteer to cover the cost of a weekly grocery shop. Laundry opportunity and shower facilities for the volunteer are provided. Internet access is provided, most of our rooms have wireless internet access. While being part of a community of service users and staff, volunteers can also enjoy their own privacy, if and when they need it. There are numerous opportunities for volunteers to take part in the local community and take part in social activities in and around Eaglewood. This entails things such as night courses, gym membership, activities in the local parish etc. Public transport to Dublin is available either by train or by bus, it takes about 30 minutes to get to the city on the bus, 15 minutes by train. Both bus and train run on a very regular basis. Our service entails supporting people with personal care, meal preparation and support, when needed, in their daily routine. Volunteers would assist staff with shopping, budgeting, transport or medical appointments, swimming gym, holidays etc. Living and working in the centre will give the volunteers the opportunity to experience a unique way of learning by being part of a community and by working together with local people of different backgrounds. On one hand, by involvement in support work the volunteer can learn a set of skills previously unknown to them, on the other hand, the time spent living among Irish people here is in itself a valuable learning experience. They get to experience a different culture as well as informing people of their own culture. We have also found that the volunteers have used their time with us to make choices about prospective career paths.
