The overall objective of the project is protection of the marine environment of the Baltic Sea area and improvement of life quality of Neman River delta population which will be achieved by reducing level of water pollution and improving of the access to good-quality drinking water in the project area including Neman River delta. Achievements: 1. Wastewater treatment infrastructure was created in Slavsk (Russia) (including construction of wastewater sewers (7000 meters), 9 pump stations and wastewater treatment facility).2. Water supply and wastewater treatment infrastructure in Juknaiciai (Lithuania) were improved by construction of sewerage and water supply networks, gravity sewer and pressure sewer systems, 3 wastewater pump stations and by renovation of main wastewater pump station and treatment plant.3. Water supply and wastewater treatment infrastructure in Pajuris (Lithuania) were improved by resonstruction of wastewater treatment plant, by building of water suply and wastewater networks and by installing one main sewage pump station and several water treatment plants within the existing well field.4. The share of treated wastewater in the total volume produced by households and business entities in the project area was increased from 12.4% to 90.1% (e.g. the increase rate in Slavsk (Russia) equaled to 100%.5. Drinking water quality standards were improved – 1400 people (Juknaiciai – 930, Pajuris – 470) directly benefited from this result. 6. The rate of access to good quality water for the population of Neman River delta was improved by connecting to the network 248 people (Juknaiciai – 104, Pajuris – 144).7. The level of coordination of environmental protection of the territories on both sides of Neman River delta was increased through elaboration of recommendations on amendments to the development strategies of Slavsk, Silute and Silale municipalities and of concept of a joint project in the field of environmental protection.8. Concentration of biochemical oxygen demand in 90.1% of the waters which are being discharged from Slavsk, Juknaiciai and Pajuris to Neman River delta area and further to the Baltic Sea was reduced to levels below 15 mg/l to meet by 2015 HELCOMs Recommendation concerning measures aimed at the reduction of discharges from urban areas by the use of effective methods in wastewater treatment.
