Build Up - Making Young People aware of Technician Level Training for the Construction Industry and Developing Initial Training for Surveyors, Architectural and CAD Technicians and Site Managers
The Build Up project will approach the problem of recruitment to technician-level training for the construction industry. The project will initially undergo a web-based study on how both young men and women from diverse ethnic backgrounds might be attracted into training as architectural technicians, surveyors and site managers. This exercise will be undertaken in conjunction with individual employers and specialist agencies dealing with young people (i.e. youth and careers services) and will further attempt to involve both female and ethnic minority construction professionals on a consultative basis.A guidance and training module will be created for the sector, comprising areas such as key skills, work-based training, management and co-ordination skills and support, guidance and information towards a career path. The end module will be designed to cover 6 weeks of training and will be aimed to be used with small participant groups (12-15 persons).Once developed, the module will be tested with small groups of young people, particularly those from disadvantaged and disengaged groups with a further focus upon the involvement of young women. The results of this pilot stage will be both evaluation and refinement of the training and guidance tool. Accreditation of the tool will be sought by each involved partner on a national level. The end product will be accessible via a dedicated project website, further supported by a small number of printed versions for additional dissemination.
