"Botkyrka 15 minutes" is using radio as a tool of empowerement for local youth in Botkyrka municipality, south of Stockholm. The goal is to form a team of youngsters (first time voters) and spark their interest for politics, local as well as international. 15-20 youngsters will be trained in citizen journalism and radio production and broadcasting skills by a professional journalist, who will also act as their production manager. The goal is to produce a 15 minutes show that will be broadcast on local radio and online, as well as in MP3 format available on the program's own blog and on the municipality website. The aim is also to increase the participation of young people in their local community as well as the society at large. The project aims to raise consiousness of democratic processes, political processes, gender equality, discrimination, sustainable development, and dialogue as a way of participation and empowerment. To show how personal challenges can be connected to local issues and societal processes. The time period stretches from early November 2009 up to the Swedish national elections at the end of September 2010. The concept has potential to be implemented in other communities in Sweden and Europe.
