The "Border Crossings: People and Places' project provides beginning understandings of the global issues surrounding migration, which affect both Europe and Australia. It brings together eight universities from the EU and Australia with significant expertise in cross-cultural communication, international relations, languages, development studies, history, politics and law to create a joint mobility project for 64 undergraduate Australian and EU students. The project's design involves innovative curriculum elements that bring together courses with multi-disciplinary academic foci purposefully selected by each of the partner universities; a 30-hour internship in the host community; joint and shared curriculum elements incorporating pre- and post- exchange events; a mid-term seminar and intensive language courses with a unified academic programme. The project's unique conceptual framework explores historical and contemporary notions of international migration, people movements and the construction and meaning of identity, for individuals and groups. Providing for each student's active involvement in their host community this project will foster a better understanding of cultures and languages other than their own; build social networks and friendships with peers; extend both academic and workplace competencies, thus allowing students to better understand some of the complexities, concerns and responses being made to migration, in different parts of the World. Undergraduate students will examine these issues in the context of Europe's transnational institutions and from Australia's regional perspective.
