Beletrina 2015-Stories that can change the world
Start date: Dec 30, 2015, End date: Dec 29, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

We are continuing the same editorial policy and work programme in the second year of the project: 4 foreign authors will be translated into Slovene and 2 Slovene authors will be translated into English. The selection of foreign authors is as usual based on their quality and relevance for Slovene readership, as well as their visibility within EU. We have always paid particular attention to lesser known literatures and in order to bring these books closer to the Slovene public, we try to invite authors to our major literary festivals and other events. The planned four translations into Slovene as a lesser used language go from the also lesser used language Finnish (Sofi Oksanen) and the other three from French (Patrick Modiano), German (W.G.M. Sebald) and English (Hanif Kureishi). Sofi Oksanen will be guest of our international literary festival Fabula in 2017, which will ensure major outreach to the audience. In 2016 we will again include two Slovene authors in this circulation who have proven to be of highest quality in a national context and in translation. The translation will again go into English and the titles will be distributed on English-speaking markets in GB, USA and Canada. These translations will also be used as a tool at addressing publishers from other European and non-European markets, which prefer to read entire works and not just sample translations before deciding to buy rights. The continuity with the three-year programme action plan is clearly visible and is very much coherent to the professional work plan of our organisation. The editorial policy and translation practices go hand in hand with a very precisely mapped out promotional strategy, which is carefully adjusted to every individual book. Our distribution on home territory is led by our long-time reliable distribution partner who supplies all Slovene bookshops and libraries in Slovenia and in regions where Slovene minorities live. In Great Britain we will cooperate with Central books – the distributor of our British partner Istros books and in USA and Canada we will cooperate with Guernica editions who has a distribution net of it's own. Our e-book editions will be distributed directly via Beletrina's account at Amazon, iBookstore and Kobo, as well as via our own e-book platform Biblos, which is the first and the largest Slovene e-book platform for selling e-books and lending e-books via public libraries in Slovenia. We will also offer e-book editions at platforms suggested by our partners Istros books and Guernica, who know their respective book markets thoroughly. We also sell books via our web bookshop and at our own bookstore in Ljubljana’s old city centre (Slovenia), where we keep personal contact with our customers.
