BAth YMCA European Volunteer Scheme
Start date: Aug 1, 2014, End date: Nov 30, 2015 PROJECT  FINISHED

Our project was based mainly around our children's work in our nurseries, after school clubs and holiday club, however the volunteers did choose to gain some extra experience in our Health & Wellbeing centre and Social Enterprise Cafe in Bristol. Our community gym unfortunately had to close as there was not sufficient resource to continue it, and our volunteers chose not to take the option of spending time on our main Hostel reception this year. This was only an optional part of the project so was left to the volunteers own choice while planning timetables. The volunteers worked in four of our nurseries, our Bath nursery, Melksham nursery and two Trowbridge nurseries, caring for children from three months to five years old. Our other two nurseries were too far away to be practical to visit, just because of the distance and journey time. In the nurseries the volunteers helped with all daily tasks; setting up and running activities, helping children settle in when they arrived, serving and clearing away snacks and meals, reading stories, playing games, changing coats and shoes and other aspects of the normal routine. In the after school and holiday clubs the tasks were very similar however the age range of the children was different, from four to eleven years old, which brings different opportunities and challenges. While working with the children the volunteers were encouraged to design and implement their own projects and activities with the children, based either upon aspects of their own language and culture or areas in which the volunteers have an interest. The volunteers carried out research, planned the activities and prepared resources, implemented the activities and reviewed the outcomes. Two of the volunteers chose to additionally gain experience in our Health & Wellbeing centre in Bath. This involved working with the staff team to help gym members, serving on the gym reception, taking bookings for classes, answering queries, maintaining the gym equipment, and other normal daily tasks. The Health & Wellbeing centre has it's own community of staff and gym members, offering a welcoming environment for everyone looking to engage in fitness, movement and health awareness. One volunteer chose to spend time in our social enterprise cafe in Bristol, The Kitchen. This involved helping with the normal daily service, looking after customers, serving food and drinks, taking orders, dealing with payments, however it also enabled the volunteer to be part of a team of staff, volunteers from the local community and young people gaining experience to help them to find better opportunities. The volunteers lived in the three bedroom shared flat at the top of our main building in Bath. Coming together from three different countries the volunteers were able to learn from each other about their backgrounds and cultures as well as improving their knowledge about Britain and British culture. The volunteers timetables mostly involved them working separately however there were times when they worked together in the out of school clubs or nurseries. They attended a local language course, made friends in the local community, spent their spare time enjoying the local area and socialising. There were three volunteers who were part of this project, Maria from Spain, Julien from Germany and Alzbeta from Slovakia. The volunteers were in their early to mid twenties. Throughout the project they formed a close relationship and supported each other while here but also towards the end when they began to search for their next steps after the project, and have kept in contact since moving on as well. The objectives of the project were to provide an intercultural learning process for the volunteers and target groups (staff, children, families, gym members and others), offer an introduction into early years and playwork practice in the UK for the volunteers and to promote personal growth, understanding and tolerance within a multicultural environment. All these objectives were achieved consistently throughout the project. The environment of living with volunteers from different countries, working for our organisation, sharing in British culture but also celebrating events and festivals in the childcare settings from around the world all provided a wonderful mixture of intercultural learning. The volunteers had the opportunity to work with different age groups of children, the nursery age of 0-5 years and the out of school club age of 4-11 years, which provided them with experience in two quite different environments and allowed them a detailed insight into the working practices of both as well as regulatory requirements. The project created lasting positive relationships, between the volunteers as a group and also between the volunteers and the staff, children, families and other people with whom they had contact on the project. All three volunteers said that the project had a profound effect upon their lives.
