PROJECT

Back to the Future Camp (BC) is aimed for youngsters between 14-20 years of age. Camp will take place 27.7.-5.8.2014. Camp place is in Putkilahti - an idyllic country village about 50 km from Jyväskylä. Accommodation will be in an old school building maintained by the very active village society of Putkilahti. There will be 14 participants coming from Germany and about same number from Finland. Together 28 participants (including leaders).
Main theme of the BC is to give participants an idea of the countryside nowadays. What is it like to work and live there. What kind of threats are there and also what kind of possibilities. What has been the effect of the EU in the countryside - good or bad? Is there something a single person can do to affect these changes - what and how?
Participants will experience living and working together with people from a different culture. They will understand the responsibility that they have, not just of their own actions and their lives but also of the affect their actions may have in the lives of others. Participants will be more capable and willing to use the language skills they have, maybe they will even be motivated to learn more. English is used as a common language, but of course German and Finnish are used as well when needed.
Participants will mostly be working as pairs or groups. There will also be discussions, brain storming and debates on various subjects around the theme. They are encouraged to take pictures, shoot videos and to record sounds - these are used for multimedia presentations and picture galleries which will be made during the camp. They will also be made public by both parent organisations and also in the village of Putkilahti.
Big part of the Finnish culture is of course nature. Participants will have a chance to experience that at it´s best in Putkilahti. There is untouched wilderness, forests and lakes to see. There will be hiking, swimming, boating and naturally also the traditional Finnish sauna is part of the program.
Participants will be responsible for cleaning the campsite. They will also have a chance to work in the kitchen preparing traditional Finnish and German dishes, and they will have a chance to bake a cake for the farewell party. With luck they can eat fish that they have caught themselves! Heating up the sauna is also one thing the participants will be responsible for.
