Aunty Social - Pop Goes The Workshop
Start date: Jul 9, 2011,

We want to tackle social exclusion and promote community cohesion by setting up a community pop-up arts tearoom that will provide positive arts activities and will encourage young people to interact with each other away from alcohol. We find that that the public spaces where people can engage seems to be disappearing, with young people having few places to meet outside pubs and bars. Opportunities to make social connections (and eventually networks) that are really important for healthy societies are vanishing. So we want to address this by creating a friendly public space where young people can just connect and engage through friendly conversation, arts activities, tea and cake. Why tea and cake? Food culture has always been a way of bringing people together, and all communities, cultures, age groups like a good cup of tea.Over the five months of the project, participants will take part in a variety of organised activities: needlecraft, knitting, organic cookery, cake decoration, DJ/music workshops, book clubs (reading groups), drum workshops, screen-printing, badge-making. Through working with arts professionals, we hope to give participants the chance to develop their creative skills, gaining a qualification where possible e.g. Arts Award."Pop-up" refers the temporary nature of the activity, we want to be able to set up workshops in a variety of different locations such as cafes, libraries, empty shops (with owners' permission) at a range of times and dates. This means that we will be able to engage a wider range of participants. By making use of social media and retro branding, we're hoping to create something that looks a little bit different, a little bit quirky, that will draw people in.
