Colégio São Martinho is a private school which is integrated in the public educational network and is therefore financed by the public budget. Our educational offer ranges from the primary school (9 years old) to the secondary school (pre-university), with students between 9 and 18 years old. The school is situated in the outskirts of Coimbra and, for this reason a significant part of our educational community has some financial difficulties. We point out the fact that in our educational community we have integrated some students with cognitive disability.
Our educational project is rooted in the excellence of our students’ formation, through a solid transmission of scientific knowledge, namely in the scientific and technological areas. We have been achieving excellent results.
Our application represents an attempt to broaden and deepen our educational offer. Our effort lies in two guidelines: expanding STEM teaching, integrating it in teaching activities which lead to the enhancement and operationalization of competences which conduct to an improvement of our students’ abilities to use foreign languages.
To meet the needs we have identified, we need to provide our teachers with the tools which will enable them to effectively improve the strategies implemented in the learning/teaching process. We will try to include in this group of teachers those whose profile is directly connected to the aims of this project, creating a heterogeneous team. Thus, we will enhance the results of this project.
The activities which shall be performed will have a great impact on the adoption of new teaching methods and tools, especially in the STEM area, enabling the introduction of a new learning offer related to robotics, supported by the autonomy granted to our school regarding our school project and our curricular offer. We also hope that these activities will endow our teaching practices with the European dimension, which is a key aspect for the European formation of our students, who are full citizens in a European community, and must face nowadays demands.
Therefore, we will try to study and explore teaching models from other European countries recognisably successful. In this area, we would like to highlight our special interest in the Finnish teaching model, which is based on a set of very interesting fundamentals, and which can be implemented in our school, supported by the autonomy granted by the law governing private schools funded by the State. We also consider that the exchange of experiences concerning more efficient strategies which facilitate the integration of students carrying cognitive disability is an asset.
All these activities will improve our teachers’ linguistic competences, and thanks to this project they will acquire a set of tools and experiences which will have a positive impact on their daily practices.
Our application paves the way for a future application to an Erasmus + Key 2 project, which will integrate some of our students in this exchange.
