ARTERY: Art - Education - Therapy
Start date: Oct 1, 2010,

ARTERY proposes to create a route through which artists, educators and therapists can communicate, share their expertise and develop training scenarios to enhance social competences of marginalised and disadvantaged adult learners. Educational programmes for socially vulnerable students have to go beyond strictly educational measures and deal with dysfunctions close to those more often in focus of therapy: behavioural, emotional or mental disturbances. Accordingly, one of the key competences dealt with in such programmes is social competence, closely related to mental health, ability to cope with frustration, assertiveness and integrity. Arts workshops have proven to be an excellent way for creating a learning environment to address complex issues in teaching adult disadvantaged learners. Their impact on the students can be greatly enhanced if the teachers running the courses could benefit from the expertise of therapists dealing with mental dysfunctions and develop a holistic approach in which education, personal development and therapy overlap.ARTERY addresses the above need through:- setting up an open virtual learning and communication environment (DOKEOS-based elearning platform) for the exchange of practical approaches- designing learning paths on the platform through which to show an exemplary set of teaching scenarios- collecting material across Europe on how social competences are fostered in artistic, educational and therapeutic settings- building interactive on-line modules through which to engage educators in learning experience- publishing Manual of Social Competence based on shared input from arts workshops, lifelong learning courses and therapeutic sessions- disseminating and exploiting the above on a wide European scaleAll the specific goals contribute to the main project objective: to empower marginalised and disadvantaged citizens to develop social competences which put them in a stronger position in society and the labour market.
