Scholengroep 1 Antwerpen, henceforth referred to as School District 1 or Antigon, is one of the 28 Districts of GO! Education, which represents publicly run education acting under the authority of the Flemish community. School District 1 comprises all levels of education with the exception of special education and is responsible for 36 institutions, both compulsory and non-compulsory education. Annually 18000+ learners enroll in a course and over 2500 staff members are striving to assure and offer the utmost quality.
The schools of Antigon are primarily based in the city of Antwerp. All educational providers in this area act within a societal metropolitan context, which has rapidly changed in recent years.
To maximum effectuate core activities, the institutions collaborate on a communal vision as written down in Antigon’s Comprehensive Plan. From this point of view School District 1 tenders a project application. It’s a clever tool to use when working on mutual determined priorities of the policy. The intended objective is to offer quality education to all learners and achieve an increased qualified outflow in a rapidly changing, diverse society. The realization of the pedagogic project of GO! (a document containing all objectives and values of GO!), enquires a policy with an international outlook. It represents an open mind, without prejudice and with consideration for everyone’s opinion.
Within the context of this mobility project ‘ Antigon in the digital era’, School District 1 is preferable to opt for a selection of the district’s schools, in the light of co-creation. Bearing in mind the geographical area and diversity in : educational level and offer, motivation and ability of the schools.
Upon selecting members of every participating school, several criteria and needs of the particular school will be taken into full account. This approach will make sure the project and its results will meet with the necessities of both staff members, schools and the School District.
The prioritized in-service training themes are: ICT-integration, diversity (differentiation and inclusion) and first-line care by teachers: our schools deal with large diversity, with students with various socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. The M-decree strives for inclusion, which consists of measures that enable students with special educational needs to register and remain in regular education. Differentiating is a challenge School District 1 is eager to accept. This asks for an innovative and adapted approach. With this project School District 1 wants to unfold this story and aims to facilitate the introduction of the M-decree in its schools. Employees need support to gain insight in innovative differentiation techniques. This is possible due to taking part in a course to increase skills, therefore ICT will be better integrated in class practice. The school management faces the challenge to revise its vision on education, while of course safeguarding the quality.
This project allows to take part in numerous international courses and conventions.
Good preparation of the participants is very important, keeping in mind the maximum return on educational effectiveness. This preparation is initiated earlier during the selection. From an organizational point of view the project office takes care of several matters, as important as the substantive preparation. Prior to every in-service training activity, the participant recognizes the offer and the associated objectives. In advance a consultation with research groups, the school and if applicable within the region and/or school community (school-exceeding) takes place, therefore educational questions can be prepared.
We expect the participants to gain insight in diversity and its approach: making new pedagogic techniques such as differentiation and ICT-integration their own.
The project increases intercultural awareness with the participants and obtains increasing motivation and involvement.
The school policy is evaluated and corrected based on acquired insights concerning diversity, ICT-integration and educational innovation in general.
School District 1 maxim effectuates core activities and promotes a sustainable staff policy and both vertical and horizontal co-creation between schools.
The plan of action connected to the strategic and operational objectives of the Comprehensive Plan is monitored.
School District 1 initializes the European project process and makes schools and their employees aware of the European and international context in which they pursue the realization of the societal assignment of the pedagogic project of GO!.
The ultimate goal is to meet the challenge of teaching in the 21st century with the necessary knowledge and skills to enable all young people, regardless of their socio-economic background, to develop their talents in an increasingly diverse society.
