The CEIP Gloria Fuertes, located in Alzira (Valencia-Spain) is a multilingual center whose main characteristic is its experimental program. The program consists of learning a foreign language by the 80% of the curriculum. In our case, the target language is English which is combined with the other two official languages (Valencian and Spanish). In our daily life is essential to integrate the three languages and also they with the appropriate contents as well. This fact will ensure that our students are able to transfer the content from one language to another and improve their communicative competence in the three languages. This objective will be the basis of our training work through Erasmus+ during the period 2014 to 2020.
Therefore, the 4 participants chosen from two educational levels (Preschool and Primary) will be trained in the following topics:
- CLIL (content and language integrated learning). We need to improve the theory associated with this methodology but mostly the practice by observing real classes and exchanging opinions with other experienced teachers. This would allow us to determine the most useful methodology for teaching a foreign language but could also show us ideas to apply to the learning of Spanish and Valencian (which in some cases are L2 or L3 of the students). Consequently, we will help the development of the underlying communicative competence of these three languages .
- Synthetic Methodology for literacy learning (Phonics International). We consider the importance of understanding the role of phonics in the process of language learning. This fact will help not only in the English class, but also it would benefit some aspects of the other languages of the curriculum.
- Developing students’ oral communication skills. We have identified the students’ need for improving their oral expression because at the school the most worked skills are reading and writing. However, they should be able to gain confidence in themselves to improve their pronunciation, fluency and clarity in their ideas.
Finally , the course delivered in Finland "Leadership in primary schools " is not so much related to the methodological change but it is related to our intention of innovation, internationalization and successful implementation in our school of good practices in Europe.
As a result, and from the point of view of the students, we want to help them to achieve the objectives but trying to improve, specially, the quality of the diversity treatment (social, linguistic and cultural ) and to stop school failure. From the perspective of teachers we want to expand their opportunities for professional development and thereby motivation and satisfaction with their daily work. Regarding the institution in general, our goal is to create a sense of modernization and internationalization. This may be possible by using tools such as the eTwinning platform Erasmus + and cooperative work with other teachers through a strategic partnership.
The results will be shared with the rest of the staff. These actions will be recorded in our PAF (Annual Training Programme) during the course 2014-2015. Moreover, within our usual performances collaboration with the “Cefires”, we will trained other teachers in our Community.
We also believe that the contents of the courses could be integrated into the School Parents Association. Teachers will have more ideas about how to work with motivation for reading, study skills, homework , extracurricular activities ... that could also be applied in our environment.
Likewise, we are designing a plan to help pupils with special educational needs and the movilities could enhanced and expanded our ideas with contributions drawn from other participating European teachers. Regarding this issue, the diversity treatment offered in other European centers would help us to improve our Diversity Plan.
Finally, the most important benefit would be the creation of a strategic partnership with other European schools. The mobilities would offer us the opportunity to search for partners with similar needs and motivations and, therefore, would be easier to start working on a common European project .
