Alternative Energy Based Heat and Electricity Production in the Border Region (AltEn_BordR)
Start date: Dec 31, 2009, End date: Jan 30, 2011 PROJECT  FINISHED

Sustainable energy supply is long term aim both on a global and on a European level. Currently, natural gas crises highlighted the need for increased domestic energy production, important alternative energy sources are biomass and the organic fraction of waste. Both countries have high potential on alternative energy, but those are under-utilized. The joint research evaluates the alternative energy potentials (from biomass and organic waste), the possibilities of the utilization and the possibilities in the cooperation of the two countries. The project aims at exploiting the advantages of common utilization of natural resources and synchronized development of waste management and energy supply. The cooperation leads to new work relations between Hungarian and Romanian researchers and strengthen the cooperation of the two universities. The general objective of the project is cooperation between the two universities in order to enhance waste-management and biomass utilization, as well as sustainable energy supply.Target groups: local and national government, development agencies, investors and the society. The main specific activities of the project are:1. Elaboration of a common methodology: for the investigation and evaluation of alternative energy sources; for the investigation and evaluation of energy consumers and energy networks; for the logistic and economic investigations and evaluations; discussion of the methodological aspects in a workshop.2. Investigation and evaluation of alternative energy resources: communal waste suitable for energy production in the border area; sewage sludge suitable for energy production in the border area; agricultural and forestry biomass suitable for energy production in the border area; evaluation of the different biomass types' possibilities for energy production; discussion of investigations and results in workshops.3. Investigation and evaluation of energy consumers and energy networks: prospective energy consumption and energy networks; prospective heat and electricity consumption; energy networks for their ability to integrate alternative energy resources; evaluations of energy production possibilities; evaluation of alternative energy resources' possibilities for integration into the energy supply of the area; evaluation of the possibilities of cross-border energy transport; discussion of investigations and results in workshops.4. Investigation and evaluation of logistics and economics: logistics of the energy production possibilities; economic evaluation of the energy production possibilities; synthesis of the energetic, logistic and economic evaluations; discussion of investigations and results in workshopsMain results: 5 joint research results; 4 joint research results used in practice.
