Actvise Forum Theatre

This project, ACTVICE, has been developed to meet The National Lifelong Learning(LL) strategy of the countries in this partnership, which aims to significantly decrease the high levels of national drop out rates in secondary/vocational education by 2015 (LL 2009), especially among the socially at-risk groups, including minority groups. This issue needs to be addressed since inaction would mean incredible waste of resources, especially seen against a backdrop of an ageing workforce. Some factors affecting early school leaving are: the youth often are bored; they do not see meaning in their education, nor what they want out of life. Career and guidance counsellors and teachers at both primary schools and secondary/vocational education need to improve their skills & develop innovative counselling and teaching methods to motivate and help pupils acquire the skills of learning to learn, especially for those where the regular educational system is not suitable. Moreover, it is important to involve pupils in primary school (6th grade) and continuously in secondary education so that they actively become a part of their integration and possibly provide basis for attitude changes. Forum Theatre (FT, theatre of the oppressed) has been used successfully in a wide range of learning situations. Developed by Augusto Boal, the method aims to change passive audience to active actors, to enable the challenged pupils to prepare themselves for the real world & the future, and not to break with inner & outer suppression. The project will primarily use the learnings & techniques developed by the Minerva-funded project, An Educational Dimension of Conflict Resolution through Cultural Production, where FT was successfully used to motivate students and promote intercultural dialogue-learning situations. FT is an obvious tool for conflict resolution. The project will develop a TRAINING COURSE, MATERIALS and a HANDBOOK on the FT method for counsellors and teachers. A web-based SOCIAL NETWORKING (e.g. Facebook) will be established where pupils can blog and thus strengthen group relations and keep them active in their development. A WEBSITE will be established where teachers and counsellors can access and upload their resource materials as well as share experiences. The project partnership has balanced representation from various sectors with expertise in migrant and social issues, e-pedagogy (PO), teaching and counselling (P1), Forum Theatre method (P3), working with at risk-youth and mentoring (P4), and the coordinator of "act and change" project (P5).It is envisioned that teachers and counsellors will be better equipped to reach out to the youth; motivate them & change their attitude and that FT will awaken the pupils' perspective, help them resolve their conflicts, make a more informed decision on their careers and see the meaning in education, acquire a positive attitude in general, open up their creativity and motivate them to complete their education.
