Start date: Jun 1, 2015, End date: May 31, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

Since the launch of the Free Childcare Scheme in April 2014, the use of childcare service in Malta has increased significantly. The Foundation for Educational Services is responsible for thirteen childcare centres throughout the island. Quality remains a crucial aspect of this service provision and increasingly so in a context of standards and milestones for children to reach. The quality of childcare is a national priority featuring in the national educational context. Furthermore, the importance of quality in childcare provision is being addressed also on a European level. In June 2014, the proposed Quality Framework for Early Childhood and Care was launched. The report of the Working Group on Early Childhood and Education and Care under the auspices of the European Commission proposes key principles which would ensure quality of service. In view of the above developments, the Foundation for Educational Services (FES) continuously works to to strengthen its management and staff competencies to be able to deliver the best possible care for the well-being and development of the children and their families using its service. The main purpose of this project was to improve quality in childcare provision in line with national quality standards and the proposed EU Quality Framework, 2014. Through this mobility project the FES partnered with Early Childhood Ireland (ECI) to give nine Childcare Centre Coordinators and one Programme Coordinator the opportunity to go on professional visits to childcare centres registered with ECI.
