"Absense of war is not peace" was a training course (TC) co-financed by the Erasmus + Programme, that took place in Setúbal, Portugal, from 3 to 9 May 2016. This TC was inspired in a project idea that came from an informal talk during a Study Visit in August 2014, in Armenia, called “Building Peace in Caucasus”, where participants identified the need to get more competences related with Peace Education, Education for Peace and Education about Peace. The Aim of this TC was to promote and support the role of young people and youth NGOs in peace-building activities that contribute to living together in dignity and dialogue in conflict-affected areas and communities and beyond them. To achieve this aim a set of objectives were formulated, namely: A) To promote the presence and the role of young people as positive actors of change in peace-building processes; B) To strengthen the role of young people and youth NGOs in identifying and speaking up against human rights violations, including discrimination, hate speech and those human rights violations affecting especially young people and children; C) To support the field presence of the European Commission in order to promote the values behind the institution; D) To develop the competences of youth workers in conflict transformation and peace-building; E) To enhance the youth workers capacity to take action at a local level in environments affected by previous or ongoing conflicts. This TC gathered 24 youth workers, youth leaders and people that works with youth from Portugal, Armenia, Italy, Georgia, Poland, Moldova, Egypt, Luxembourg, Sweden, Russia, Spain and Turkey. The activities were based on non-formal education methodologies such as learning by doing, experiential learning, role playing, best practices, group discussions, open space technology, team buildings and ice-breakers. Through non-formal education methodologies, the project gave youth workers the opportunity to develop their knowledge, skills and attitudes towards peace education, conflict transformation and conflict management, it also provided a space for sharing good practices and resources in order to establish follow-up projects with the aim of working upon those topics. The formulated objectives were successfully achieved because the different activities set in motion set a framework that added value to all the different actors involved. A partnership was establish between old and new partners with relevant local and international experience. Adding to that the participants were trained and activated in different areas and establish a strong friendship, that in our believe is the most effective mechanism for peace in a long term perspective. The project had strengthen the partners capacity to enhance social cohesion in Europe and contribute to the well being of young people while strengthen the cooperation between youth organizations and local communities in order to establish a stronger civil society with young people active engaged. Furthermore, throughout the project the participants had the opportunity to develop 5 project ideas as follow up projects through Erasmus+ Programme ensuring the sustainability of the youth work and enhancing their international dimension.
