The mobility project «International working experience, language and tourism (2016-18) is a partnership between Ålesund videregående skole (upper secondary school) and Hecansa (Hoteles Escuela de Canarias S.A.). The main activity of the project is a three-week long apprenticeship on the Canary Island, which includes a language course, on-the-job training, as well as planning and organizing of programs for cultural visits. The participants of the project are second year vocational students in the field of tourism. The accommodation of the students will be in shared rooms at the Hall of Residence Hotel Escuela Santa Brígida and they will have their meals in the canteen. Both localities belong to Hecansa. The Hotel Escuela Santa Brígida and restaurant, which are both run by students, will host the on-the-job training. This is a two-year project, applying for a total of 30 student motilities and 8 accompanying teachers. Our school involves in educational entrepreneurship and internationalization in all fields of studies. The school has won several prices for the best young enterprises in the county, 10 years in a row, as well as several times the Norwegian championship. Additionally, the school has experience in solving real assignments for the local business world, like the one from the company Vard; “How to recruit employees from Spanish speaking countries?”. Internationalization is at the same time an area for development, where language and business is pointed out as a strategic area. Our partner Hecansa is a tourism school of tradition, which has departments and hotels for apprenticeship several places on the Canary Islands. Hecansa has a long experience in successfully developing and executing international mobility programs in partnerships with educational institutions from across Europe. The school of tourism excels itself based on their obvious link between theory and practice, which will be a new international area of training for our vocational students. The main objectives of the project are to motivate students to complete their vocational education and training with an improved result, to increase the number of certificates of apprenticeship, and to raise the attractiveness of vocational studies and hence increase the number of applicants. Furthermore we aim to improve the students language skills in Spanish and intercultural competence, as well as their international orientation. The objectives are to be targeted through work placement, interaction and communication with employers, colleagues and others during the stay. The students’ personal development and skills gained will be documented in Europass documents as well as ECVET (European Credit System for Vocational Education and Training) and increase the students’ employability. Accompanying teachers will monitor students’ learning outcomes and personal development, as well as bringing experience back to school and boost future international efforts. These objectives are strongly linked to low recruitment of vocational students compared to the need for skilled workers. Expected outcomes of the project include increased number of applicants for vocational studies, improved rate of accomplishment, and more well - skilled students to join the workforce of the growing tourism industry in our area. In a broader perspective, we hope to contribute to a common European solution through exchange of experience gained in international mobility projects.
