PROJECT
FINISHED
“A Step Forward towards a gender Equality” was a 5 days training course that involved 32 youth workers coming from 10 European countries and 2 trainers. It took place in the Municipality of Montemaggiore (Palermo province) from the 13th until the 18th of July 2015.
BACKGROUND
The project was developed in order to increase the knowledge and awareness of youth workers about the gender identity, particularly in the context of working with young people with different cultural backgrounds. In this way, the project got focused on a large number of gender and culture-related issues and the ways that influence the development of young generation during their everyday life and the way of working with them. Examples for such issues are: different gender roles; how gender identity gets shaped, how it gets developed over the course of the life; how different perceptions about gender roles can influence a young person; which are the different gender identities; what kinds of gender identity minorities can exist; how a young person can be influenced by belonging to a minority; what kinds of stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination can there be based on gender identities; how can they be treated; how young people can be supported; and other questions.
OBJECTIVES
The main aim of this project was to contribute to the process of building tolerant integrated society based on respect to the gender equality and cultural diversity with active intercultural cooperation and dialogue, through raising the awareness of a group of youth workers about the theme of gender identity and cultural diversity and through supporting their development as youth workers and peer educators in this field in their communities. The training course was focused on supporting the target group of the project and on making further impact on the local communities involved.
TARGET
Target group of this project was youth leaders coming from various youth structures – youth organizations, various clubs, informal groups. Participating in this training course, the youth leaders had a chance to develop themselves as individuals, but also as active social citizens. Having in mind that the project gathered young people from various parts of Europe who worked on topics of common European interest, this training course had a strong European dimension.
The activity program offered place and time for exchanging ideas for future cooperation in the field, and the trainers provided both on-the-spot and follow-up support to the interested organizations and individuals.
