A Refugee Like Me
Start date: Jul 2, 2016, End date: Dec 1, 2016 PROJECT  FINISHED

This project creates dialogue between young people from the UK, Sweden and Slovenia, including refugees, and decision-makers. The current refugee crisis in Europe has concerned young people from the partners Wonder Foundation, C.A.R.E and Fundacija Sursum who have already engaged in voluntary work with refugees. They identified the barriers that they see young refugees -their peers- facing to accessing education and employment as issues which will affect the long-term wellbeing both of the refugees and of their host communities. Helping young people from host communities to understand the situation facing refugees and to come up with proposals for policy makers and decision makers is key. Young residents of Slovenia, the UK and Sweden will be classmates, co-workers and neighbours to those now arriving as young refugees and how they welcome them and how the organisations that work with young people, whether schools or community projects, reach out to refugees and encourage them to integrate will affect the long-term thriving of these communities. Over the course of 5 meetings, young people will have a chance to refine their understanding and suggestions and decision-makers will have a chance to hear from a range of young people about what measures they would like in place to create positive environments for education and gaining skills and aptitudes for employment for young refugees. Following this dialogue, resources will be created to help organisations and young people who have not had the chance to be involved directly, so that this learning can positively influence good practice and help many young people, including refugees, to access education, become more employable, and become good European citizens.
