"42 -the meaning of Life, Snow, and Everything" is a nine day long European Youth Exchange (1.1) that takes place in the small town Nykarleby in Finland. The theme is healthy living, including both physical and mental health. Finland is hosting and Slovenia, Hungary, Italy and Spain are participating actively. Total number of participants will be 46. The exchange aims to provide young people with a framework for a healthy lifestyle by focusing on the benefits of participating in outdoor activities and of choosing healthy food. The programme is a combination of practical activities where young people work in teams trying out different sports and “close to nature”-activities complemented with a number of workshops in different ways dealing with physical and mental health, self esteem and trust. The emphasis of the programme is to build self esteem, acceptance of other people, open our minds, learn about other cultures and value different countries. Trough challenges in outdoor activities we can compare our lives and the situations we live in. Some of the activities we have planned for are cross country skiing, ice skating, relaxing, winter swimming, discussions and city games. Activities are designed to give us exercise, making us think about healthy living, get close to the nature and to the Finnish culture and of course to have fun. We learn by doing and use non formal education methods.The number 42 is, according to the book (and movie) ”The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” the Answer to the ultimate question of Life, the Universe, and Everything. We want this exchange to take us a bit closer to that answer.
