3 D LAB support system for biology teaching/learning

Research studies have shown that computer simulations can significantly contribute togreater efficiency of teaching and learning, especially when it comes to teaching andlearning science. They can bridge the gap between theory and practical experiences, resulting in better visualization and understanding of different science phenomena.Despite the recognized positive outcomes of using computer simulations, in teachingand learning science, studies show that only a few science teachers include simulationsin their teaching practices. The European Schoolnet ICT Impact Report also concludedthat teachers' motivation is a critical factor in adoption of these kinds of innovative ICTcontent and pedagogies and that actions should be built into policies that encourageteachers to use it more and use it more effectively. The aim of the project is to contribute to the improved understanding and evidence baseof the benefits and impact of computer simulations on the efficiency of learning/teachingbiology and other science subjects, to provide teachers with a tool/model necessary forthe efficient implementation of computer based simulations in their teaching processand consequently foster the uptake of these simulations in their teaching practices. Withthis we also wish to raise the effectiveness and attractiveness of biology teaching andconsequently stimulate scientific curiosity and interest in young minds and encouragemore young people to pursue a life in science to fulfill the growing shortage of researchtalent in Europe. In developing 3D simulations and tools/models for their efficient implementation, specialattention will be given to results of research and good practices in this area, thesupporting framework for the uptake of these simulations, the pedagogy behind the useof these simulations, integration of the simulations into existing educational activitiesand curricula and teachers' motivation and training. To ensure successful disseminationof the results a web portal will be set up, where all of the gathered research andevidence on the impact and use of 3D simulations, good practice in this area and theresults of the project activities will be available.
